How to commission stained glass
1. Practical considerations and measurements
Take accurate measurements of the dimensions, including height, width and diagonals. If it is an irregular shape please make an exact template. If the panel is to fit a window, door or other fixed size aperture there will be more than one measurement. The pane of glass will fit in a recess and is usually held in place with putty or beading. See the diagram below:

Note the position of ferramenta or physical support as this is important in design consideration.
A panel can be fixed between the panes of a double glazed window. This can be an ideal way to display and protect your stained glass, as well as being able to take it with you if you move. It will be necessary to check that the thickness of the panel can be incorporated within the cavity, typically allow 16 - 20mm.
For freestanding or hanging stained glass panels consider any critical measurements which may affect the size and shape.
It is your responsibility to comply with Building Regulations and health and safety considerations; definitive advice can be sought from your local authority's Building Control department.
2. Design
Next your requirements and any specific ideas you may already have will be discussed. The cost will vary depending on size, complexity and type of glass used so it is important to discuss the budget early on so that the design can take account of this. Depending on the nature of the commission, a design fee may be payable which will be deducted from the final price should the work proceed. Consultation between artist and client is necessary throughout the design stage and will result in a sketch to scale giving an impression of the finished piece along with samples of glass to be used.
3. Execution
Once the design is accepted the client enters into a contract with the artist and work commences. This begins with the production of a cartoon or cutting guide. Glass is cut to the pattern, the surface of the glass is painted or manipulated according to the design before being joined together with lead came. A proportion of the cost may be payable in advance to cover the cost of materials. For large commissions payment by instalments may be required.
4. Fitting
On completion delivery / collection will be arranged. For domestic installations the client arranges for a local joiner to fit the stained glass panel at their own convenience. For larger commissions it will be necessary for the artist to work with the architect and others to oversee installation.
