Hazel Yabsley - Stained Glass Artist
Inspiration
I enjoy linking ideas and themes with the colours and textures of glass. I take much of the inspiration for my own work from nature, local history and religious expression. I am especially interested in medieval stained glass and draw upon this within my own contemporary style.
Glass has wonderful variation in texture and colour - subtle or vibrant shades, and streaky glass with ribbons of two or more colours in the same sheet can evoke the elements of landscapes including water, skies and dramatic sunsets. 'Seedy' glass, its name refers to air bubbles trapped in the glass, creates a sparkling texture and can look like raindrops. The careful choice of glass ensures that each piece works well with the available light, as well as being integral to the design.
Approach to creating stained glass
The close working relationship between client and artist during the development of a commissioned piece is essential. An important part of the design stage is consideration of whether the piece has a specific purpose - is it a gift, is it going to bring some light and colour into a space, is it going to screen an unwanted view and is it going to 'say' something? For the artist it is also important to appreciate the personal meanings attached to images and ideas as well as thoroughly researching themes and using that understanding to create stained glass which produces the desired result for the client.
I employ a variety of techniques which are well established in the craft. These are described in more detail in the terminology section and the gallery provides examples of some of my work made to commission and made for exhibition. Each piece is unique and traditionally hand crafted with care.
'Ethics'I am a supporter of the continuation of traditional crafts and techniques so my choice of glass includes mouth blown 'antique' glass made in England. This has an especially pristine translucence and the added benefit of leaving less of a 'footprint' than imported glass and can be made to order.
All work is carried out according to the Code of Practice of the British Society of Master Glass Painters.
Community
I have delivered a hands on workshop introducing stained glass to a Year 6 class at a local primary school which the children found inspiring and interesting. I made a panel comprising children's designs from a local Sunday school class.
I have enhanced level clearance from the Criminal Records Bureau.
